We all know what it is to have a bad habit we hate but cannot stop. Some are merely annoying, and others can destroy the quality of our lives. Most of us struggle with at least one thing we do repeatedly that we detest but keep doing, even though the cost may be high. Whether it is procrastination or drinking too much, we do not fully own our lives.
The most sure way to avoid bad habits sounds so simple as to be silly, but here it is. Don't start! Every day of our lives we make a thousand choices, and with many of those choices we have an opportunity to avoid establishing bad habits. The strength to make a life affirming choice comes from self love and self respect and often, respect for others.
When you were a child you may have come up in an environment that taught you that you were bad, or unlovable, or not worthy. If this is so, then it is essential to do all you can to heal your self esteem and find appreciation for yourself, in whatever ways you can. If you are currently raising children, you have the golden opportunity to instill in them high self esteem so that they can resist the choices that lead to bad habits.
Many of the most destructive habits can be avoided altogether, if the strength to make a positive choice is there. Like smoking. This is not a substances the body needs and it is easiest to just never start. Self esteem provides the power to say no to the peer pressure around it. The same can be said of drinking to excess. If these habits are already in swing, then self love and the motivation to be in charge of your life leads to seeking the support needed to take back your life from these bad habits.
What about anger management in relationships? Habitually indulging in conflict, or a habit of screaming, needs to be replaced with healthy habits. Learn coping skills, like taking some deep breaths, going for a walk for a cool down before discussing the problem. There are many self help books providing guidance to clean up bad habits in relationships.
Associations are powerful. In replacing bad habits with good, it may require the courage to stop associating with others who have the same behaviors, and also avoiding situations where those habits get triggered. Be kind to yourself and get support if you need a helping hand.
