Marriage and divorce are both common in our society. It is estimated that 90% of Americans marry and that 50% of those marriages end in divorce. Many people find that their relationships are strengthened both before and during marriage by talking to a marriage and family therapist. Exploring your personality differences, values, differences, and expectations before you marry and taking the time to reexamine them when conflicts occur during the marriage is the best way to minimize conflicts and build a lasting relationship.
You should consider seeking marriage or premarital counseling if you have never been married, if you are experiencing conflicts in your marriage, if your last marriage was unsuccessful, or if you have never had marital or premarital counseling before. If one partner in a long-term relationship has reservations about commitment, a counselor can help both of you to get to the root of these commitment issues and move forward.
A healthy marriage takes commitment, time, and effort. If you and your spouse are experiencing serious conflicts in your relationship and are considering divorce, a marriage and family therapist can help you to work through the issues and conflicts in your relationship and teach you how to work together. Signs that a marriage is heading toward a divorce do not necessarily mean that a divorce is inevitable.
Many couples find that even the most serious issues, including infidelity can be worked through with the help of a marriage and family therapist and the willingness on their part to put forth the effort. The majority of marriages fail because couples are unwilling to discuss their problems and are never able to move past them towards a solution. A counselor can provide an objective ear and unbiased insight into the conflicts in your relationship.
If divorce is the only option left, however, a marriage and family therapist can still help both of you to adjust to the transition, explain the divorce to your children, and find support groups and organizations that can offer you further assistance during this transition period.
If you are concerned about the future of your upcoming marriage, or the state of your current marriage, you owe it to yourself and your partner to seek the services of a marriage and family therapist today. Even the most successful and happy relationships require effort, commitment, and compromise. The right marriage and family therapist can make all of the difference.
