How would you like to make a volcano in your own home and watch it erupt? Fun, wouldn't you say? Just follow the steps given below to easily create your very own volcano and enjoy watching it erupt.

What you'll need

  1. A sheet of plywood - size of the plywood depends on the size of the volcano that you're planning. Make sure that it's big enough to leave enough space on all sides after placing the mountain.
  2. An empty 2-liter bottle.
  3. Papier-mâché, plaster or salt dough.
  4. Liquid dish wash soap - 1 tbsp.
  5. Baking soda - 1 tbsp.
  6. White vinegar - ¼ cup
  7. Red food coloring agent - a few drops
Making the volcano
  1. Use plaster, salt dough or the papier-mâché to form a mountain around the bottle, making sure that the bottle lid is kept open.
  2. The volcano will erupt from the open mouth of the bottle. So plan the flow around this by forming ridges and channels from the mouth along the surface of the mountain that you have made right up to the base. These are the paths that the lava will follow.
  3. Allow it to dry and paint it with acrylic or spray paint. You can use your imagination by adding to the effect with artificial trees.
  4. After fully drying spray it with a clear sealant.
  5. Mix the liquid dish wash soap, baking soda and the coloring agent separately in a cup or container, and pour it into the bottle.
  6. Keep it in an open area and pour the white vinegar into the bottle.
The volcano will erupt spewing the lava that flows along the ridges that you made.

Take care

  1. Make sure you leave the lid of the bottle open. If the bottle is in a sealed condition after adding the vinegar, the pressure might cause the bottle to explode.
  2. Remember that the ingredients are not exactly beauty lotions. Handle them with care.
  3. Don't allow children to handle the ingredients without adult supervision.
  4. Avoid contact with eyes.
