How To Check Keyword Competition

Keyword competition is very important for Internet marketers doing both ppc and article marketing. Competition for ppc will have an impact on the price you have to pay for your keywords and for those of you doing article marketing it will determine how difficult or how easy it is to get ranked high in search engines search results. Ideally you would like to be ranked first under most competitive keywords but that is extremely difficult and not very likely to happen unless you have significant amount of experience, devote a lot of work and some considerable resources.

How to check keyword competition?

Well it can be easily checked through keyword tools Google Keyword Tool is probably most common place to check and one of the most reliable once as well. Sign up for Google AdWords and log in to your account. You click Opportunities and then Tools tag in the vertical menu on the left and you will see keyword tool right there. When you search for keyword, phrase or website and the results are displayed competition bar is located directly after the keyword to the right. You can further filter your results to have only those with low, medium or high competition level displayed according to what you are looking for.

By clicking on top of the competition column you can sort the results by descending or ascending competition level. Google uses a graphic bar to show competitiveness of a keyword along with the comment which is displayed when you hover over the bar. The comment only says low, medium or high so sorting the results will give you better idea of how competitive a keyword is compared to other keywords. To put things into perspective you can also do a search for exact match (through home page of Google). Then the number of results will give you sense of how many competitors you have. When there are over 20.000 results it will usually take some work to rank on the first page of the results.
