How Should I Hold the Club?

I believe that a good grip is essential to a good swing. That being said, there is no one perfect grip. However, there are some key essentials to a good grip.

1. Your hands must be together and act as one unit.
2. The hands must be right of top dead center or slightly strong.
3. My preference is that the V's formed by the thumb and index finger of both hands should point to the right shoulder.
4. The right hand cannot be on top of the left hand, meaning the V of the right hand cannot be pointing left of the left hand V.
5. However, the right hand can be underneath or stronger than the left, they do not need to be the same.
6. Too strong of a grip will de-loft the club and make it harder to hit the driver.
7. I prefer holding the club a little firmer with the last three fingers of my left hand; most prefer an even pressure in both hands.
8. The interlocking, overlapping and 10 finger grips all work.
9. Hold the club light enough that you can make it wiggle, do not hold the club to tight or you will create poor swing issues.

If you change your grip be prepared to spend time on the range to get use to the change. I believe the best way to find the perfect grip for you is by doing this:

• Stand normal with your hands to your side.
• Take a club and grip it naturally with your left hand while your hand is still by your side.
• Now hold the club out in front of you and mirror the right hand V to the left hand V.
• Chances are you will find they both point between your neck and your right shoulder.
• This grip will always bring the club back to square at impact.

Check your grip periodically. It is one of the keys to a consistent golf swing.
