How SEO Works

Whenever someone needs to find out any information about anything from the Internet, it's just a matter of placing the keywords in a search engine to get the list of websites that contain information about the desired topic. Most people usually visit the top results that they get from the search engine because those are usually the most relevant to the desired term that contains the desired information. When a user goes to use one, the search engine looks for that particular issue throughout the internet and shows the related results on a page in the monitor. The interesting fact is that there may be a lot of websites available online that contain the same targeted fact or keyword, but how will the engine create the ranks for that particular issue? The answer to this question is it depends on a powerful web marketing technique that is known as Search Engine Optimization or, shortly, just SEO.

SEO is a technique that facilitates these engines to find any site among millions of similar sites during the search query, thus it also helps a site to get a higher rank among the results of any search. Everyone knows the basic truth that search engines are not controlled by humans; they are just automated systems that follow a particular process to find out a particular web page. Finding processes of the engines vary tremendously from the process of any human being as these engines are being driven by the entered text. An engine uses processes like crawling in the web, indexing the content, processing the request, calculating the relevancy and retrieving the results.

A search engine scans the web sites to find out what is available there. This task is done by software that is usually termed as crawler or spider. Crawlers track links of different pages and make an index of what they found. As there are numerous web sites available, it is not possible for the crawlers to check any page in a short time like in a day or two, rather sometimes it takes around to or three months to revisit any page. As the engines can't think, they are unable to judge the quality or beauty of any page - so they do not see flash movies, frames, images, java scripts and password protected pages.

After the crawling process, a search engine makes an index of the contents and stores the indexed page in a massive database. Whenever someone asks for a topic in the engines, the results are retrieved from this huge database. Once it has received the request of searching a topic, the engine processes the request by comparing the search sequence with index pages that are saved in the database. After getting the list, the engine then calculates the relevancy of each page with the search sequence, and finally retrieves the result that they found after completing the above steps.

So in order for the site to appear within the top results, a site would need to make sure that all the content refers to the subject that it covers. A site can use SEO and its various techniques to make sure that their page is spotted by a search engine and then ranked higher once all the necessary information is located and highlighted by the search engine.
