How Reading Out Loud Can Make You a Killer Copywriter

Expert Author Joshua Black

Whether you are just dipping your toe into the world of copywriting, or you have been writing for a little while already, here is a tip that can improve your writing ten-fold. By reading your copy out-loud you can find all kinds of hidden issues that were not apparent when you wrote your sales letter the first time. Read on to find out more.

When you have completed a sales letter after the editing process, try reading it out loud. Actually read it out loud, don't just read it. If you have to, find a quiet place where people won't think your crazy, after you read through new and improved ways to do whatever it is you are selling.

The other key here is that you should read your copy out loud more than once. If you have short copy (1-2 pages) your goal should be to read it out loud 10 times. If you are using a long-form sales letter that contains 10-20 pages, then you should attempt to read it out loud at least twice.

The things you are looking for when reading your copy, are the following:

  • Any speed-bumps that might keep the reader from staying engaged. This includes headlines that are too long, boring testimonials, sub-heads that are in the wrong place etc.
  • The main story- make sure this is using the emotional side of the reader in order to gain their attention.
  • The flow of the entire piece.
  • The close.

When you are reading your whole sales letter out loud, the flow of the copy is critical. Not only do you want to make sure that you have addressed each of the prospects concerns about the product, but you have also made sure that the copy stays invisible in the background.

Your copywriting is not like a novel. You do not want to call attention to the fact that you are trying to sell something. A sales is the most fragile thing, especially on-line where the customer has no mercy and can click away at any time. Anything that you can do to the copy to make it more "invisible," while at the same time time keeping the reader's attention and pulling them into the copy, is the way to go. By reading out loud, you will catch much of this. When you are just typing something, your sense of hearing is not engaged and there can be many fine little points in the copy that stick out to the reader when you simply open your mouth.
