How Not to Train Your Dog

Expert Author S. L. Welch

If you need to train your dog, please don't make the mistake (like I did with one of my dogs) that I did.

The worst possible thing you can do is to train your dog by using intimidation and fear tactics. This will get the job done, but this is the wrong way to go about doing it.

Our family had a dog and unfortunately I trained our little dog in this fashion (I feel somewhat embarrassed say this, but I know it's for the greater good). Don't get me wrong. I did not abuse the dog or anything like that, but I still used this tactic nonetheless.

I've since learned a better approach using positive reinforcement, but to this day our little 3 pound dog is somewhat afraid of me. She likes me, but she likes my wife much better. When given the choice, our little dog sits on my wife's lap and not mine.

She's a good dog too. It's been 5 or 6 years since we got her and since I trained her I can tell that she still remembers the way I had gone about training her and she is still looks at me as the "guy who scared her into submission" (very, very sad).

Anyhow, please don't use these sort of tactics to train your dog. I mentioned that I had learned a better way. Well, that better way came from something that I found online.  It is a PROVEN, step by step method to make sure you and your dog live together harmoniously and that you train them the right way without making the same mistake I did with one of my dogs.
