How Mystery Shoppers Can Get Their Own Clients

Expert Author Shari Joseph

You are an experienced mystery shopper.  You have enjoyed getting free meals, merchandise, and earning extra money.  But, you have reached a point where you say, "I like mystery shopping, but wish I could earn more money."  You can!

Right now as a mystery shopper, each company you work for probably has contracts with their clients to have their stores shopped on a regular basis.  Let's say it's once a month.  You get to shop one of the stores once every few months.  You make a little bit of money on each shop. The mystery shopping company earns most of the money on all the shops, every month, and on a steady basis.

So, how do you get your own clients and go from mystery shopper, working for someone else, to getting your own clients and working for yourself?

This article will not touch on the specific details of starting a company, but will give you a simple overview of the process.

1. Create a basic store questionnaire.

2. Find three store owners who would want your service for only the cost of any purchases made (you charge no fee for your service).  If they like the report you do for them, ask them for a couple of sentences stating what they liked and how the reports helped them.  These will be your first testimonials that you can show potential paying clients.

3. With testimonials in hand, you can create a promotional package.  That package would include an introductory letter, your sample questionnaire and of course the testimonial letters.

4. Go for paying clients.  Give talks to your local business community on topics that might interest them; like improving their customer service, seeing their business through the eyes of their customers, gaining customer loyalty -- these are just a few ideas.  At the end of your talk, after you have given them helpful information, give them information about your service and how it can help them. Have business cards (and brochures or flyers) on hand. If someone seems like a good prospect, give them your promotional package. You should get some nice leads using this method.

You can possibly speak at your local library, or maybe local business groups, Chambers of Commerce, etc.

If you are not comfortable speaking, Toastmasters International is a great way to hone your skills as a speaker. They are located almost everywhere.

Though the above may seem simplistic, this will give you a basic idea of how to go from mystery shopper to mystery shopping company owner.
