How Much Life Insurance Should You Purchase?

Those considering buying life insurance for the first time may be wondering exactly which policy to choose and also how much they should be insuring themselves for. This can be a confusing issue for those who have no experience in buying life insurance. First of all, there are a lot of different products available and also how do you determine a value that you should be using.

There are a lot of websites where you can find information on the types of products available and they can help you to decide which product is right for you but the question of how much insurance you need is less straightforward. It is not something that is standard and will vary depending on the person and their circumstances.

There are many factors which will determine the amount of life insurance you may need. It is important to think about issues such as whether you are fit and healthy or whether you have a pre-existing condition. The answers to these questions will determine how likely you are to develop an illness or to die earlier. When taking into consideration how much to insure yourself for, you should think about how your family would cope if you were to suddenly die. What if you were the only earner in the family? Would there be enough money to pay for funeral costs and to pay the bills. It may be important to make sure you are covered with enough insurance to pay off your mortgage and other debts, funeral costs plus a lump sum for your family to use as a financial cushion. If you have young children, you may want to make sure that there will be enough benefit paid so that they can get a good education.

It is important to think about all eventualities to ensure that the amount of life insurance that will be payable on your death will not leave your family struggling financially. Depending on the age of your children, you may need more or less insurance. Obviously once your child leaves school or college, they will most likely be going out to work and so will be earning their own income so they will not need to be supported then but if your children are very young, you should consider how many years they will need to be looked after financially.

There is a lot to consider when deciding how much life insurance to buy but speaking with a financial advisor or insurance broker may be able to help you get this into perspective before buying.

Always be sure to check exactly what your policy covers with your insurer.
