How I Doubled a Website's Multi-Million Dollar Ad Revenues in 4 Months

You're probably thinking, "Oh great! Another one of those get rich quick articles promoting some scammy web product." Well, not this time folks. This article isn't for Joe Blow blogger or someone who wants to make a work-at-home income via the internet. This article is relevant to websites that are already doing well. They have 1,000,000+ unique users per month and want to learn how to dramatically increase their ad revenues quick.

Before I started optimizing my clients' ad inventory, they monetized their traffic solely via Google AdSense. Like many websites, there was little done to optimize their ad inventory. They changed their creative once a month and observed changes in RPM's (Revenue per thousand impressions).

As you can imagine, there was definitely a need for someone to focus on optimizing their ad inventory. In 4 months, I introduced 12 different ad and affiliate networks to the ad inventory. As of right now, all the ad networks are intertwined running behind or in front of each other using the Double Click for Small Businesses ad platform. The goal in mind was to run each ad network simultaneously at proper priorities so each impression is the highest paying impression possible.

There are three fundamentals to generating such a dramatic increase in ad revenues:

• Creating internal competition: RPM's will grow as a whole if you introduce new ad networks to compete against the current ones. In essence, you are decreasing supply to raise the price.
• Providing users with more options: If a user sees the same ad 200 times they will click that ad one time max. However, if the user saw 200 different ads they are more likely to click on multiple ads which will dramatically increase CTR's.
• Get the right ads to the right users at the right time: The biggest fundamental to boosting ad revenues is optimization. The list is endless of factors one could optimize by. For example, I optimize by time of day, day of week, category channel, geographic, demographic, display creative, behavioral factors and many other factors that get the right ads to the right users.

It's 4 months in and revenues are still increasing. Even after doubling revenues there are still many opportunities to increase revenues. It's important to note that the optimization game is a 24/7, 365 day a year job. I recommend hiring a dedicated person in-house or outsourcing the ad inventory optimization. This is the key to realize such dramatic spikes in revenue. There are no one size fits all ad optimization platforms. Each website is completely different and a human touch is essential to customize efforts to each website and to integrate initiatives from all parts of the online company. This person's job is to optimize and drill down as much as possible to continually increase RPM's and as a result, revenues.
