How Effective Are Managers With Controlling Personalities?

Would it surprise you if I said that managers with controlling personalities are their own worst enemies? Here's why.

The controlling personality is motivated by fear and also motivates through domination and fear. What impact does this have on such a manager?

Well the tendency to control or over control one's environment is most often driven by the fear of re-experiencing deeply embedded feelings of failure, inadequacy, loss, and the fear of rejection to name a few.

The controlling manager's way of compensating for and distracting themselves from such feelings is to control others around them. Such control gives them a temporary lift in their mood, self confidence, self esteem, self worth, energy and so on.

The key word however here is "temporary".

As soon as the "lift" has gone then they're right back where they were before having to do battle again to ward off the eruption of those unconsciously held feelings again. So clearly this makes such individuals very rigid in their approach to life and to others. What's more the dreaded inner feelings which "boss them around" often have no alignment with the company's mission.

This means that the agenda as dictated to that person by this internal emotional programming may actually take precedence and over ride their true mandate as a manager. In other words their emotional baggage may get in the way of them doing what is expected of them.

Unfortunately many such individuals, who are seen as hard driving and seemingly success driven, are only responding to their inner need to feel peaceful and OK within themselves. They are misperceived as good managerial material and are often placed in positions of power where they ultimately do more damage than good.

Such managers often feel threatened by the idea that they may have a problem and hence can become quite defensive if approached about such matters. As a result they may simply find themselves on the firing line only to be caught by surprise, made to feel demoralized and angry.

It is now possible to assist such individuals in a positive and nonthreatening manner that can not only help them release their emotional issues permanently but also turn them into even better managers than they or their bosses could possibly expect.

In order to accomplish this it becomes necessary for one to begin to extract/erase the negative roots of their emotional programming once and for all. This can be done with a new coaching process that is now available.
