Anyone who has run badly or under expectation will know the feelings that are experienced at the end of a race.
Firstly, the physical pain - it hurts and it hurts badly, especially if it has been one of the longer races such as a marathon. Your body may have been in action for 4 or 5 hours and the last sections have seemed never ending. Everything in your body cries out for relief, but if your determination wins through, you keep going to the finish no matter how you feel or how your body is hurting. Only time and rest can give the healing your body needs at this time and fortunately the human body is great in this respect because in most cases 2 or 3 weeks of rest will see it recovered and ready to go again.
Secondly, the mental anguish - when you are resting after a race with your body in great pain your mind will tell you that you do not want to run another step. It will go over the different points where you hurt badly in the race and try to persuade you never to do such a thing again. With every pain and ache your mind will suggest things in such a way as to make you think you were really stupid to try and do what you have just done. Some people never recover from this. The combination of physical and mental pain puts them off and they never run again. Thankfully, in most cases the pain and the feelings are only temporary and with a good period of rest things return to what they were and you begin to think of the next race you will participate in. Your resolve will be a lot stronger not to have these kind of experiences again and with more attention to training etc. a better performance should be the outcome of your next race.
