In thinking about re-examining and possibly restructuring a belief system, we need first to define, or-redefine, some essential points. What is it that we are looking for? What will a happy and successful life look like for us? What elements will it contain? These are not questions that can be answered with nouns. Remember that we are not looking to fill the pallet that is our life with more 'things'. We are looking to fill it with Joy.
The definition of a happy life is different for everyone. For some it means being surrounded by family and loved ones. For other it means making a larger contribution to the extended community. There are as many different definitions as there are minds that can conceive desires. It is only in being very specific about how certain situations make you feel that you can ever hope to uncover what it is that makes you happy. The best way for you to learn this is to try as many things as you can think of that feels interesting to you try!
Check life out! Explore with the wonder of a child examining his world for the first time. Give yourself permission to do whatever you want to do for a while. Not forever. Not yet. You are not ready to give yourself full reign to do whatever you want to do until you fully understand the total responsibility that comes with it. Without this understanding, many may see the opportunity to do 'whatever they want' as an endorsement to go out and hurt others, or disregard their feelings in favour of doing 'what they want'.
It is essential that you understand that in searching for what it is you love to do, you must listen to your soul, not your ego. It is also important to have a least a little faith in the underlying goodness of the human race. It is difficult at times to see us as anything other than a species without redemption when we look at some of the things we have done to each other over the millennia. Try to look at all of this as examples, no of evil, or 'badness', but of ignorance, and lack of light.
It is not possible for your higher self to have any desire that would hurt another soul in that desire becoming manifest. If your cynicism tells you that the world shows otherwise, remind yourself that these are not examples of people acting out their soul's desire, but ones in whom the connection to soul is lacking. If you can see the perpetrators of some of the worst things imaginable as being completely blinded to the greatness and magnificence available to him, you can begin to feel compassion, rather than repulsion, when thinking of what we so often term as 'evil'. For such people, their options are limited in the way that they respond to the world.
Indeed, this is the case for all of us, until we come to a place of understanding what it is to live consciously. That is, essentially, our destination. It is only in living consciously, that we can ever hope to manifest what we desire as physical events in this universe. I must say here, that I writer this with a humble heart, as I am far from this understanding. I do, however, take strength from the fact that at least I know that I lack this understanding. For many years I lived on autopilot, or what I now call sleepwalking. I wasn't even conscious! I didn't know that there was anything to understand. I thought we just... well... lived.
And of course, we can. If that is what you choose to do, you are perfectly able, and perfectly entitled,to 'just live'. But after a while, I decided that I didn't want to do that any-more. I was tired of 'just living', and wanted to experience this things I had heard so much about - life!
So, for the next little while, give yourself permission to go out and play! When you hear you intellect screaming at you to 'grow up', or to 'try something you might actually be able to do', put a gag in it! This is exactly the time that you need to silence your inner voice and just enjoy yourself.
If screaming down a grassy hill on an old cardboard box will get the blood pumping and remind you of when you were ten, then do it! Who cares if you are 45, and forty pounds heavier than you were then? If pulling out your old typewriter and beginning he story of your life in manuscript form has been an idea nagging away at your for years, then do it. Is it going to hurt you or anyone else? Probably not. Will it make some people laugh at you? Maybe. Will it make you laugh at yourself? Hopefully. The idea is to laugh. Get yourself chuckling and giggling and guffawing and belly laughing. Remind yourself of what it's like to be alive.
