From my research it is clear that the main way that eco friendly shower heads work is by reducing the flow rate. Older shower heads, before around 1992, use 5.5 gallons a minute with the later ones using less than half of that at around 2.2 gallons a minute.

What the eco friendly ones do is to drop that even further to around 1.6 gallons per minute to save you water and some even do not start flowing until the water has reached the correct temperature.

These are very good ideas to help reduce water consumption but they also fail to address the most important factor of all, which is health.

It is a fact that we have literally thousands of toxic chemicals in our supplies and one of the worst offenders is chlorine as when it vaporizes it converts to chloroform, which is a strong respiratory irritant and causes fatigue.

You actually absorb more harmful toxins through a 10 minute shower than by drinking 2 liters of unfiltered water, such is its effect.

There are some companies that in addition to the usual water filters also provide special shower filters too. The best use a twin process and will remove over 99% of all the toxic chemicals to keep you safe.

So while eco friendly shower heads are a promising idea, apart from the fact the flow rate is so low, I think it is more important to protect yourself from harmful chemicals and if this means taking a slightly shorter shower to save the equivalent amount of water, then why not!
