How Do ADHD Students Cope With College?

Going away to college can be an exciting time for young adults but it certainly does have some growing pains especially for students with ADHD. As Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz said, "There's no place like home" and that phrase often rings true the first day of college when you realize that mom is not cooking dinner. When you wake up each morning it's on you and only you to make it to class on time. Instead of relying on a mom clock you might need to get some thing called an alarm clock. Becoming independent has its shares of challenges but the rewards are worth the adversity. Rather than just send you off with your wings clipped here is some valuable information you will need to survive college.

First and foremost it's important that you start each day on time. It's essential that you make this a habit so that it will become second nature to you. If you can start the day off right by being on time to classes, it will give you momentum for the rest of the day making it easier for you to finish the day off right. If you find it difficult to get up on time consider using two alarm clocks. Some students find it beneficial to place their alarm clock far away from them so they can't automatically pound the snooze button. Once you are awake its important that you follow some sort of routine so that you are not distracted by e-mails or the internet.

The second most important thing you can do is set goals. This will give you some thing to reach for. You want to set miniature goals and big hairy audacious goals. Set smaller goals for your daily schedule like, waking up on time, getting to class on time, working on homework every night, and getting to bed on time. These goals should be simple and reachable. As you accomplish the smaller goals then start on the big goals these might include, getting A's in all classes, or obtaining a scholarship. Whatever your goals are strive to hit them every day.

If you can work on setting a good routine for yourself as well as setting these smaller and larger goals than you can be a successful student even with ADHD. It's a simple formula for success but has been proven over and over again by students all over the world.
