Nowadays, quite rightly in my view, bullying is widely recognised in the workplace. Legislation has led to personal empowerment enabling employees to defend themselves against tyrannical bosses. However, there is a difference between motivational leadership and bullying. This article sets out to try and separate the type of behaviour aimed at getting the most from an employee and outright bullying.
Firstly, you should ask yourself, am I being singled out in any way? Is it team talks that you are finding intimidating? In other words, are you taking something personally that you should not? Think hard about this, if the offending behaviour is not aimed at you alone then it is not bullying.
It is worth noting that every company has a culture, a tone that is set by those in charge. For instance, any business that involves selling will have a target led culture that can become aggressive. This should not be mistaken for bullying. Do not get involved with these type of work cultures if you feel they will not suit you; there are plenty of work environments where aggressiveness is not a requirement where you may be happier.
Often, stress in your personal life can lead to a belief that you are being bullied. Sometimes, if things are going wrong in one area of your life it can seem as if they are going wrong in every area. Negativity feeds off itself, make sure you separate out the various issues in your life and deal with them accordingly.
Finally, if you feel that you are being bullied at work it is probably best to find something else to do. In all but the most extreme cases, whether or not you are being bullied is irrelevant, the fact that you feel you are is enough; no job, even in these difficult times, is worth your peace of mind.
