How Can God Believe in You, If You Do Not Believe in Him?

Expert Author Awdhesh K Singh

Many people find it difficult to believe in God simply because they do not have enough knowledge of God. If you are asked to name the people whom you believe, you can not name any stranger. You believe in only such people whom you know. You know a person only if you spend your time with them and you have some experiences with them. For example, you may name your parents, spouse, children, and friends as the people whom you believe. You surely cannot believe a person passing the road. Since many people do not know God, hence they can never believe in God as this poem of E.Y. Harburg seems to say.

No matter how much I prove and prod,
I cannot quite believe in God;
But oh, I hope to God that He
Unswervingly believes in me.

If you have interaction with a person, you can either believe him or you disbelieve him. You believe a person when you find that you understand the person. Even mere understanding is not enough. You even understand your enemy but you do not quite believe him. You must be able to have very clear understanding of the person in order to believe.

We fail to believe in people as we fail to understand them.

There are two reasons for not understanding a person.

The first is that we do not care for him. We easily understand people who matters to us since we cannot afford to ignore them. Who can afford to ignore his spouse or his boss? The second reason for not understanding a person is when we find that the person is not behaving in the manner we want him or her to behave. In this situation, we need to put more effort to understand why the person is not behaving as per our understanding. Is there something wrong with our understanding or the person himself is wrong?
In all likelihood, it is our understanding of the person which is wrong as in all likelihood we are expecting the person to behave just like us.

Thus when we do not believe in God, it is because we do not care for Him or we do not put enough effort to understand Him. However, if we do not believe in God, who is the loser? Certainly not God. It is us. Our lack of understanding of God actually leads to less understanding of our own self and of other people. We see people behaving in strange manner since they all have God in them and we have no understanding of God. We even cannot predict our own self. This creates a fear in us as we seem to be groping in the dark and we keep on praying God to show us the light. We expect God to believe in us and come to help us. However, God does not help us since even our cries are not right. They are not in the form of prayers coming from our heart but merely the words which are coming from our mouth. These words do not register with God who can listen only to voice of the soul.

Therefore, if you wish God to believe in you, you have to have faith in Him. Only when you believe, you can communicate with God. It is not difficult to believe in God provided you have the desire to know Him and understand Him.

Life is a mystery which can not be explained either by science or by scriptures. Truth has a body and a soul which we call science and religion. Contrary to popular perception, they are not opposed to each other but complement each other like body and soul. In fact, they can not exist without each other.

I am the founding member of The Science of Soul Foundation in India which works for the synthesis of the diverse disciplines of knowledge like science, religion, philosophy and arts. The website of the foundation is http://www.scienceofsoul.com

I am working for the creation of a synthesis between science and religion through my articles. I believe that everyone can understand this Truth by the use of intuition and reason. You can contact me at aksinghirs [a] yahoo.com if you wish to know more about the mystery which we call life.
