Hosting Out of Town Relatives For Christmas
Print This Article Ezine Publisher Send To Friends Add To Favorites Post A Comment Suggest Topic Report Author

Christmas is a season when loved ones near or far gather together. This is a time that many look forward to, especially to see family and other loved ones you don't see at other times of year. But having people - even family - stay in your home can be stressful and sometimes awkward. Try our suggestions to host out of town relatives for Christmas and keep your home full of good cheer.

Ask ahead of time if your family members or loved ones have any specific needs. If they have allergies or dietary restrictions. While you may be aware of some of their concerns, new issues could have appeared during the year you are unaware of. Asking beforehand shows a concerned host for Christmas. It also gives you the time to do special grocery shopping or to make plans to board Fluffy or Fido for the week.

Let your family member feel "at home" in your home. One of the best things you can do if someone is staying with you for more than a few days is to help them to feel comfortable doing things in your home. Show them where the silverware is in the cabinet and where snack foods are. Give them ideas of local activities they could do together as a family or on their own. You will certainly know that some family members may expect a certain amount of caretaking and others will prefer that you not wait on them. The most important thing when someone stays with you for Christmas is your guests' comfort.

To have the best time, avoid "hot button" discussions where you know you won't agree. There are many family members who disagree on politics, moral issues or other concerns - yet love each other deeply as family should. Focus on having fun and creating memories as a family for Christmas. If a "hot button" topic is brought up, push it away so your guests can enjoy themselves fully.
