Hosta Barbara Ann

Hosta Barbara Ann is a large variegated Hosta plant which will grow to about 20 inches high with a 3 to 4 foot spread. It was named after the two people who created this variety and they were "Barbara" and "Ann".

The leaves of this plant are green with a stark white margin. The leaf size is 9 inches long by 7 inches wide. This variety has the basic Sieboldiana look to it which means the leaves are pretty textured, veined, and ovate in shape.

Barbara Ann does not like sunlight but the thick leaves help protect it from slug damage.

Hosta Barbara Ann has white flowers that are held on 24 inch flower stalks and it blooms in mid-summer.

This is a newer variety of Hosta and there is not a lot of information available as to how it grows in various settings. I'd give it the basic Hosta Sieboldiana care which means shade, lots of water, well drained soil, and fertilizing every 4 months during the growing season.

Barbara Ann is an attractive perennial which can be planted with other shade plants for yearlong interest. Companions of this variety can include Astilbe, Heuchera, Geraniums, and other shade-loving Hostas.

Newer varieties can be a bit hard to find until nurseries have sufficient stock to meet the demand. This isn't one of the more popular new varieties so demand should be a bit low until it has been available for awhile.

I am planning to wait on Hosta Barbara Ann until it has proven itself in other gardens before spending the money to experiment with an untested Hosta plant.
