Make wine at home! Don't sweat it! Homemade wine making is a step by step, first things first, kind of process. It may seem complicated but if you start off with just the basics, you will relax.
The first step in making your own wine is to decide why you are doing this. Yes, that's right. Making wine at home is an all-embracing creative process. It declares your passion for producing something from your own hand and you will take great pride in that production. You will also increase your knowledge, appreciation and love of wine.
You may decide to make homemade wine to save money. Be aware, your first batch of wine will incur up-front expenses and it will take several months or even years to produce really good tasting bottles. That means you will not immediately see the savings. For that reason, most aficionados always have numerous gallons of wine gracefully aging in their home. You can do that too.
Next on your decision-making list is to choose the right set of instructions. There is a whole ton of information on the Internet. It's a good idea to purchase an e-book or other instructional material. Look for guides that seem comprehensive and detailed.
The next step would be to start accumulating various pieces of wine making equipment. Just about everything you will need for making wine at home can be purchased online or at a home brewing or wine making store.
Don't let the technical sounding equipment make you nervous. A hydrometer, acid titration kit and a fermentation lock are not so scary once you learn what they are and how to use them. In addition you will need sugar, yeast and a few common chemicals that are safe and easy to use. You will also need cool stuff like glass jugs, wine bottles and corks and wine labels. Oh, you won't need a still. That's for making "distilled" alcohols like vodka and gin, maybe someday.
If you've made it this far your next decision is where the real fun starts; choosing the essence or base ingredient. This means grapes or other fruits and plants.
If you have the right climate, space, soil, nutrients and motivation; you can grow your own grapes and make an exceptional bottle of wine. It takes at least 70 pounds of grapes in order to produce six gallons of wine. Believe it or not many homemade wine makers do this, maybe not you or I, but it is done. The rest of us will purchase the fruit or high-quality fruit concentrates. Concentrates are the packaged juice of wine grapes or other fruits and are obviously an easier way to go.
Homemade wine making can be a very interesting and enjoyable experience. As you make the first easy decisions and learn more about the process of making wine, you will get excited, get thirsty and get moving.
