Homemade Bug Spray Ideas

I am not a tree hugger or a eco-friendly fanatic. But I have recently been trying out more natural homemade bug sprays for myself and my house. In the past month, my house has been invaded with ants. We have tried everything and nothing seems to work. Some of the sprays are pretty poisonous and I got to thinking that this might not be good for the humans in the house to have these pesticides around.

Slowly, I am becoming aware that chemicals are harmful to your body and to nature. But I am a magnet for any kind of bugs! If I sit outside for over a minute or two, I can count on two or three bug bites when I come indoors. What is a girl to do? Never go outside again? Or try making homemade bug spray on her own. I have been experimenting and researching homemade versions of bug spray for quite some time. I want to be cognizant of nature and I like to do things myself. Here are a few ideas to get your mind thinking!

1. Try Listerine! Buy a big bottle at a discount store and put some in a spray bottle and start spraying. Don't spray directly on wood doors, but spray around the frames, windows, and outside structures--like dog houses. See if this works for you.

2. Check out Listerine and coffee grounds as a natural bug repellent. Take used coffee grounds and pour a little Listerine in them. Put this mixture on the base of plants for a natural pesticide and fertilizer. Don't put too much mixture and overwhelm the plant.

3. Investigate hot peppers as a way to deter bugs. Boil three cups of water and one hot pepper for a few minutes and then strain the excess pepper from the mixture. Let the mixture cool and then put in a spray bottle and spray on skin before going outside.

4. Consider trying vanilla, not imitation vanilla extract as a cheap, natural bug spray. Simply dab a drop or two on your wrists or legs. Humans love the smell but bugs are repelled by it.

I hope these ideas have got your mind brainstorming about what natural products can one use that will be kind to the environment, but will keep those pesky ants, mosquitoes and other insects away.
