When building or remodeling a multi-unit property, condo conversion, lofts or town home communities many people tend to think of unit protection as being merely the front door and a lock as the main target for any intrusion since that would be the most obvious point to gain entry, but there are other ways into homes that are within one large building. If they are separate, free standing or common wall units there are steps that can be taken to ensure intrusion doesn't happen.

A recent development in downtown Portland that has fourteen new lofts being developed from an old warehouse building is a good example.

Since this is going to be an enclosed building with a high number of units extra security measures should be taken to not only make it more secure for the new buyers and tenants, but also to make the purchase or rental of one of these lofts more attractive due to the care taken in protection of the building. High-quality doors and high-security locks are a priority from the beginning but let's discuss some more options for our Portland loft property.

While we are on the subject of doors there is an option available for purchase pre-installed and can also be installed on their own if the products have already been purchased and that is the peep hole. Not all residences require this, especially if they are single level units whose sight line is blocked due to lack of windows. A peep hole is especially beneficial for large unit buildings as it offers the ability to first have a chance to view who is at the door before granting them entrance, and in large cities, this is a good security precaution. Security screen doors are also an option and provide even more added protection from intruders, however if cost is an issue the peephole is a great asset.

While all of the services mentioned so far can be performed by a locksmith there are a couple more that will not only add higher security for the building, but increase its value, and even though these next two are not primarily thought of when consulting a locksmith, they can be performed by locksmiths in Portland and nationwide.

One of them is the installation of security bars and iron gates for the ground floor units. No one likes to consider breaking and entry to be a possibility for their new home but adding such items brings a sort of peace of mind to the future buyer or tenant in a new development.

Probably most effective of all when purchasing all of the high security products for a property such as this would be the installation of an intercom system. A locksmith has knowledge and experience with these types of measures and would highly suggest the use of the intercom as it is the first point of access for anyone, friend or not, and having the ability for tenants to be able to identify who is trying to enter the building prior to them walking through the door is quite helpful.

Always keep in mind that safety is an important feature to everyone and be sure to get the best advice you can find when considering your options.
