Whenever we see famous personalities on TV and in the movies, and see their perfect, pearly-white teeth, we kind of turn green with envy.
As everyone dreams of getting that glamorous movie-star smile, and by today's standards, the whiter your teeth, the better you look and feel. However, since some of us can't afford regular visits to the dentist, and the stains do come back, this becomes a recurring problem.
Even with daily proper care, your teeth can be stained by soda, tea, coffee, smoking and medicines. The residue of food seeps into the minute cracks of your teeth, making it nearly impossible to brush off. As whitening toothpastes only cover some minor discolorations, the older the stain, the more difficult would it be to get rid of.
Simple And Effective Home Remedies For Teeth Whitening
No matter how we deny it, using cheap toothpaste won't give us best results. An expensive toothpaste is often needed for a brighter smile. Unfortunately, getting your teeth whitened professionally is not a cheap option for everyone. If you want to forgo the creams, bleaches and gels found in drugstores, you can go for the natural approach and utilize any of these simple home remedies for whiter teeth that are both effective and inexpensive.
- Baking Soda
Considered a proven all-time favorite, baking soda has many purposes, which include tooth whitening. Most dentists agree that it's safe to use and works fairly quickly. You can use it alone on a damp toothbrush, or mix it with toothpaste to help reduce the salty taste.
- Wood Ash
Hard wood ash also effectively helps whiten teeth. It contains potassium hydroxide, a compound that will bleach teeth. The tiny crystals scrape off plague in hard to reach places and will scrub them clean. However, using wood ash too often or scrubbing it hard can wear down your tooth enamel, so it's best to avoid using it for long periods of time. To apply it to your teeth, put it directly on your toothbrush or mix it with a small amount of toothpaste.
- Hydrogen Peroxide
Peroxide is a cheap home remedy, and most people have it at home. You will probably feel some burning in your gums, but you'll be left with clean, whiter teeth. Generally, most individuals will see results within a couple of weeks but it can happen much sooner.
It's also safe to gargle, but don't swallow. Brush your teeth as you normally would, and then gargle for about a minute. Follow up by spitting it out and rinsing thoroughly with water. Another method is by dipping a cotton swap in the solution and gently rubbing it into your teeth, front and back.
- Homemade tooth paste
One of the more common home recipes for whiter teeth is a paste consisting of baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, table salt and a pea-size dab of toothpaste. Mix these together and brush away stains.
Other Effective Options For Whitening Teeth
As for other cheap and effective methods, you may also combine any of the above ingredients with wood ash, strawberries, hydrogen peroxide or baking soda for some extra whitening power. Always bush off the ingredients off of your teeth when you're finished by rinsing and brushing with commercial toothpaste.
Take note that teeth naturally have a yellowish tint because of calcium, and essential mineral for strong tooth enamel. Brushing too hard and using lemon juice, an acid, or any form of vitamin C could corrode away the surface. Once your tooth enamel is ruined, it's permanent. Your teeth will be much weaker and much more prone to cavities. As a safety reminder, all home remedies should be monitored properly and used in moderation.
