History of Golf

Expert Author Claire Jarrett

The deepest origins of golf are still unclear and up for debate. Many believe the game originated from Roman times. It was referred to as the game of Paganica. This involved using a bent stick to hit a stuffed leather ball. Others believe it derived from China, a game known as 'Chuiwan.' This was played between the 8th and 14th century, with a scroll documenting a picture of a member of the Chinese imperial court swinging a club at a small ball. However most believe the game did derive from eastern coast of Scotland, as it was the earliest source of the game to include holes when hitting the ball. The game consisted of people knocking stones with sticks trying to get them down rabbit holes.

Golf requires you nowadays to have a course where the grass is kept in perfect condition, and to have it very shortly cut. Back in the 15th century, grass cutting devices didn't exist. Because of this they played on a terrain that is referred to as a 'links' course. The terrain was a grassy rough area which was located between the sea shore and land. The grass was always short, the soil was sandy, and many dunes and sand pits existed. Very representable of the golf courses we see today. The balls that were used were leather shells stuffed with feathers being hit by a club that would have been made from wood.

Golf's status and popularity quickly spread throughout the 16th century due to its royal endorsement. King Charles popularised the game in England, whilst Mary Queen of Scott introduced the game to France.

St Andrews were the first to institute the 18 hole golf course in 1857. Before this the courses would range from a 5 hole course to a 25 hole course. Other courses quickly imitated this 18 hole course layout. Soon enough, an 18 hole course was considered the norm.

Soon golf was pioneered all over the world, mainly due to the spread of the British Empire in the 19th century. It is now one of the most popular watched and played sport we know today.
