If you need to do work around your house, there is some stuff that you can do and there are other things that you should hire out. Slate Paving is just one of the things that you need to hire out. If you hire someone you know that it will be done correctly. You also know that if you take the time to research your contractors you are likely to hire someone that will do the job for a fair price and in a reasonable amount of time.
You will need to first create a list of candidates that you would like to consider hiring for your slate paving project. You can begin this list by asking your friends and others that you trust for recommendations on contractors who understand how to successfully pave with slate. You want to talk with people you know who may have done similar project to what you are now planning to do at your home. You can also look in the phonebook and see if there are any contractors listed there that you would like to add to your list of candidates.
When you have a full list of candidates, which is somewhere between three and five names, you will need to begin doing more research on them. You can just go ahead and hire someone, but if you do that you won't know if you've hired someone who is good or not until the work is done. That is usually far too late for most people.
You need to take the time to meet with each candidate individually. You should also have them meet with you at the site where you will need the paving work done. If they don't see the job site they really can't give you a very accurate estimate on the cost of the job or the time it will take to get it done. You will also want to take the time to ask questions of the candidates and you should be thorough. This means that it is best to create a list of questions ahead of time and then ask each candidate the same questions when you meet with them.
You will find that choosing a candidate will be much easier for you when you can easily compare the answers that each of the candidates give you. You will want to make sure that each candidate provides you with a bid and a list of references. It will be up to you to contact the references and ask them about the work that they had done. You should also ask if you can see the work in person. Photos just aren't as good when you can see the work for yourself.
