Not all those who need protein are fans of flavored protein shakes, or of the vague vegetative taste of soy and hemp protein powders. If you belong to this unfortunate group, you definitely need to find alternative options before you succumb to cravings for tasty, carb-laden foods.
Here are some ingredients that you can easily add to the protein shakes you make at home, and are easily available at the local supermarket - or, better yet, fresh at the farmer's market.
1. Yoghurt. Yoghurt is an excellent, low-fat and low-carb source of protein and trace nutrients. As if that were not enough, probiotic yoghurt is rich in the bacillus Lactobacillus acidophilus, which is excellent for digestion and also cures the body of hidden fungal infections - especially candida albicans.
2. Bananas. Admittedly, bananas are definitely not low-carb - when properly ripened, they are full of glucose and fructose. However, bananas are also chock-full of trace nutrients like Vitamin C, potassium, iron and Vitamin B6. The fiber content in them also cleanses the gut and keeps digestion smooth. In short, it is the perfect foil for any problems you may have while getting used to high-protein diets.
3. Berries. Berries, especially when eaten fresh, are a storehouse of vitamins and anti-oxidants. Each berry has its own specific list of nutrients and benefits, but unless you're in the forest plucking unidentified fruit you really can't go wrong here. The color and flavor of berries is, of course, an added bonus.
The idea behind protein mixes is not to make you reliant on them, but to provide a low-fat and possibly vegan alternative to the typical protein sources like meat. Experiment with an unflavored powder, some fruit, skim milk and yoghurt. Soon you will start coming up with high protein shake recipes that leave you smug with lip-smacking goodness!
