For high performance organizations are comprised of individuals grouped in teams who secure the desired results. To be able to consistently achieve the goals suggests that each team member has this talent intelligence of gaining commitment. By having this capacity or attribute provides a competitive edge and literally creates a working smarter not harder culture.
When performance comes from the inside instead of being forced from external factions, this increases the likelihood that others have bought into working together. This buy in is not only emotional, but physical as well as mental.
Maybe this is why human resource departments are charged with finding those inspirational speakers to light the spark in others especially when sales revenue are down, employee absenteeism is up or complacency has set in.
What gaining commitment looks like is the capacity to develop and secure a self starting ability or attitude in others so that they continue to pursue their goals or the collective goals of the team. When this happens, then others will do their best because of motivation that is 100% internal.
Team members who have this talent will provide practical and concrete methods and ideas to help others achieve the predetermined results. They will be able to integrate their empathetic abilities, proactive communication skills and overall leadership characteristics to create an environment of inspiration leading to motivation. Then the internal drivers within each individual take over reducing the need for outside supervision.
When employees fail to deploy this talent, then others including other internal customers and shareholders such as vendors and external customers are not inspired and hence the overall productivity of the organization fails. Sometimes these who lack this talent fail to recognize the importance to inspire others and may rely on direct supervision and monitoring to accomplish the goals.
Some of the following behaviors reflect employees who demonstrate this talent intelligence of gaining commitment:
- Asking specifically if someone is in agreement
- Establishing team agreements and obtain 100% consensus
- Clarifying expectations and definitions of common words to be sure there is mutual understanding
- Focusing on collaboration and win-win situations
- Listening as to what inspires others
- Observing the demonstrated behaviors of others who are able to gain commitment or buy in
Much is written about radio station WIIFM ('In It For Me). When organizations have the ability to play this record and then allow others to willingly hear it as well, this can lead to WIIFU (What's In It For Us). Gaining commitment is even more important than ever before especially for those organizations facing difficult challenges because most people prefer the status quo and are resistant to change.
