Expert Author Carl Crane

The world we live in today is getting faster every day. The Internet, fast food, high pressure jobs, deadlines, assessment and ever increasing pressure to be the perfect parent or indeed child. Sometimes we all feel a little left behind. The pressure of 21st century living starts to build, Until it feels like a ton weight on your shoulders and you can't continue.

So your depressed. You feel tired, you can't concentrate, life feels dull, you have no enthusiasm, nothing to look forward to. You may even be suffering with anxiety attacks! You have to do something now. This isn't something that will go away. In fact if you ignore it and try and soldier on there is a high chance it will get worse. Depression can cost you dearly. It can cost you your job or even your relationship. You need to take action now.

Many people think the only solution to depression is to visit your doctors and get some hard prescription medicines with nasty side effects that leave you an addict. And in fact doctors are all to keen to give out prescription medication for depression without even much of a consultation.

There are other alternatives. I recommend Herbal anxiety remedies. Three that I recommend are Valerian, Passion Flower and St. John's Wort. These herbs are a powerful alternative to prescription medications.

Valerian has been used for centuries for a wide variety of ailments from treating gastrointestinal pain to insomnia. But our interest is in how it can help to stabilize your moods and help to ease anxiety. Valerian does this in two ways one it has a slight sedative effect ( hence is use to aid sleep) and secondary its interaction with the GABA Neurotransmitters in the brain. Result of using this correctly is being more leveled and able to get a good nights sleep.

Passion Flower are much more than a beautiful flower they also can contain Beta-Carboline Harmala alkaloids. This is a powerful Manoamine oxidase inhibitor which also has act as an antidepressant. This can be a very powerful tool against a general anxiety disorder. This helps give general feelings of well being along with good nights sleep again. Also look out for the side effect of this one being a mild aphrodisiac.

Lastly Is St. John's Wort or Hypericum which is probably the most commonly known herb used for anxiety and depression. In fact there are certain countries that even prescribe this for mild depression in trial Hypericum has shown to work as well as some mainstream antidepressants. There was even a major study done by the Cochran Collaboration that showed Hypercicum to be as good as antidepressant even in majorly depressed people. To listen to a Cochran review of St. John's Wort please visit http://www.cochrane.org/podcasts/issue-4-october-2008/st-johns-wort-major-depression As you can see this is a serious tool in the fight against depression and anxiety and should definitely be looked into. Being such a strong herb it can have a few small side effects such as upset stomachs and very occasionally photo-sensitivity( meaning your skin can become sensitive to sunlight)

To get the maximum effect you need to research the herbs to find out what sort of dosage you need to be taking for your ailment. The best way to do this is to visit a herbalist. But I understand that this can be very expensive. Or there are many websites that will help you to get close to what you need. These are safe so if you get it a bit wrong with dosage you can make alterations as time goes by, You are not going to do yourself any harm in trying.
