For some people, it can seem intimidating to know where to begin. It seems that there is so much information about herb gardens out there. A lot of this comes from not having the time to read up on herbs. For these people herb garden kits can save a lot of time and worry, as most of growing is already done allowing you to simple harvest and enjoy your herbs.
Herb garden kits are generally categorized by the types of herbs that are in the kit. The most common categories are tea herbs (Also known as 'tisane'), culinary herbs (Also known as 'edible'), Italian/ English garden kinds and medicinal herbs.
Most kits contain similar elements: seeds, a guide, a container for the herbs, and the soil/ pellets needed for growth. Some kits may also include guides for cooking using the herb or even recipes. For herbs from hotter regions, a dome may be included. This dome keeps the humidity and temperature high enough for the herb to grow in cooler climates. If you buy on the web ask the supplier whether they have a newsletter. Many websites offer stores that give tips to herb garden enthusiasts.
A popular option is to grow these herbs inside. This is great because you can add these herbs to your cooking pot easily. If the weather is cold, this can be an easy way to maximize your harvest as cold weather kills many herbs. The other thing is that you can easily control the water supply, as it can be unpredictable outside. Herb kits are often specifically designed to be used inside, so ask your supplier for information.
For some people the experience of gardening and being outside is the appeal of growing these plants, for these people there are kits designed to be grown outside. Do not worry too much about transferring herbs from the outside to the inside of your house or vice-versa. Most herbs survive the transfer. It will take a little work to become completely confident growing herbs outside as there are a lot more things out of your control (Temperature, frosts and rainfall for example). For beginner gardeners growing them inside in a pot is a good compromise, as it gives you the experience of growing herbs outside, as well as being easy to transfer back inside. Once you get the feeling for growing them, you can move your garden outside and enjoy them.
