Healthy Weight Loss - What You Need to Know

Expert Author James McClinsey

Healthy weight loss is both easier and proven to last longer than whatever fad diet or supplement has come down the pike. Many people go up and down in pounds, while making themselves miserable for no good reason. They simply see some clever marketing and jump on the bandwagon.

You don't need to ride the bandwagon to lose weight successfully. All you need are two principles: The Half Principle and The Wait Principle. We'll explain these later, but first we'll have a quick look at what marketers throw at you when promoting their new product.

The bandwagon mentality often happens with dietary supplements, which are not necessarily the best way to go for many people. First of all, as dietary supplements, there's less monitoring of exactly what it is you're ingesting and in what quantities. If you want to know what nutritional supplements to take, ask your doctor because they know what the human body needs and how much.

You see, many people are seduced by tricky marketing for a supplement or diet plan. But they're designed so that the before and after examples are most likely not attainable for most people. In other words, these people look like models and if it looks too good to be true, it probably is.

You know what does get results? Hard work and discipline. If you're still reading don't worry, I'm not going to suggest you do a stress test everyday (or ever- this, once again, is something your doctor knows about).

The hardest part is breaking habits, much like when quitting smoking. Eating the same, huge portion every time you eat is a road to never ending obesity. What you need are the two main Principles.

The Half Principle

The Half Principle is incredibly simple and revolves around one goal only: look at how much you want to eat and then cut it in half. If you want a stack of Oreos 8 cookies high, try having a stack of Oreos only 4 cookies high.

You can combine this with a good calorie counting book to give yourself an idea of how many calories you're saving yourself. A pound of fat has 3500 calories in it. Simple math will tell you that for every 3500 you subtract, you should be able to lose a pound of fat. And they add up really quickly as well.

But what if you're still hungry?

The Wait Principle

The Wait Principle is also very simple. If you're still hungry after eating, give yourself 10 minutes before going back for more. Chances are you're not really hungry but are feeling a bit deprived with a smaller portion.

This does require some discipline, but anything worth having is worth the wait. Give yourself time to adjust to the change- maybe a week or so and see if you really want to go back to larger portions.

By applying the Half and Weight Principles, you will experience real weight loss. You won't lose it fast, but a pound or two a week that stays off is better than 5 pounds that come back fiercer than ever.

The hard work is the general idea that you need to get your heart rate up all throughout the week. Start small with a walk around the block, then add more time and so it will go. Be sure to ask your doctor first. Couple this with the 2 Principles and you'll be headed for lasting, healthy weight loss.
