Health Care and Your Cat, What Are Your Obligations?

Expert Author Jim T Turner

Pet ownership has certain obligations. Feeding and grooming need to be done as well as keeping them away from various diseases. This is what cat care health is all about and by administering the proper care, they can live for 10 years or even longer.

Cat diseases can effectively be avoided with vaccinations. This also prevents the cat from ever becoming a carrier. Some of the most common vaccinations given are for cat flu, feline leukemia or FeLV, Feline Chlamydophilosis and Feline Infectious Enteritis or FIE.

If your cat is given a vaccination, be aware that they may experience some side effects. This goes away shortly even if they develop flu like symptoms or fatigue in the next dew days. In rare cases, the cat may develop cancer where the injection has been inserted that may develop after a few weeks, months or even years later.

Allergies can be experienced in cats just like in humans. They may be caused by disinfectants, pollen, dust or other factors. If you notice your cat experiencing any symptoms, you should stop using products around the house that might be causing it.

Also, try to keep them away from plants, and make sure your house is clean.

Fleas and ticks are another problem you may face. If your cat is scratching more than usual he may have fleas or ticks. You should check around the neck to see if there are any black dots using a special flea comb to look deeper into the fur. Flea and tick control products are easy to use and should be applied once per month.

Ticks could already be present so, you can pluck them out one by one using a pair of tweezers or applying Vaseline over the affected area. Always wear rubber gloves when you are doing this so the bacterium does not transfer to your fingers. Tick remover spray is another option you could use..

You will notice a wound when the tick or flea is removed. This must be treated by bathing the area with salt water afterwards so no infection develops.

Cat worms are inside the digestive track and not visible. There are three of them, namely hookworms, roundworms and tapeworms. Worms are a very serious condition and should be treated. You should treat your cat with worm tablets once per year. But if it is already there, then you have to get a prescribed medicine from your doctor.

Cats can cause damage and hurt people. You should trim your cats nails regularly, and provide a scratch pad to play with.

Ever heard the line curiosity killed the cat? This could happen if your cat has free reign of your house. To prevent this from happening, make sure all cabinets are closed, the windows are shut, medicine and poisons are hidden.

You must never give them chocolate as a snack as this can be fatal.

Proper cat care is the most effective means of keeping them healthy. Cats that are loved and properly cared for indoors will live five times longer. It is your responsibility to take proper care of your pet.

There are many more things you need to know to properly care for your cat. So, now you need to go to Pet Cat Care & Health to find out what the rest of your obligations are as a cat owner.
