Heading to Whitley Bay in Tyne and Wear
Print This Article Ezine Publisher Send To Friends Add To Favorites Post A Comment Suggest Topic Report Author

Whitly Bay can be found close to the North Sea Coast, with many find beaches that you can visit. Located in Tyne and Wear England, it's a destination that many people choose for their holidays. At least that is until the 80s when it seemed to be more seen as a dormitory location.

The fabulous St. Mary's lighthouse can be seen while you visit this area. First talked about in English history back in 1100. Than King Henry II would give a charter to the town later on, and it would be confirmed by King Richard I and also King John.

Connected as part of the Crusades because Pope Nicholas IV would be granted money to pay for an expedition of the Holy Land. Later on in history those Monasteries would be dissolved by the Crown. Though coal had been one of the mainstays of the economy for some time, it would slow down during the 20th century.

It was at that time that it would become a more popular retreat for many getting away on holiday. Becoming a seaside resort that many people would travel to via the railway. The town was once known as Whitley, but that would change in 1890 or sometime close to that. Too many people would get it confused with Whitby which was located in Yorkshire.

There was once a permanent fixture called Spanish City located on the seaside, but it would be demolished. Though still standing as part of that is the Spanish City Dome, it is protected. There are many places where you can shop, including a shopping center that is fairly new.

Redeveloping of the area has been going on constantly to make some of the older buildings refurbished. An ongoing product that should now be very close to being done for the enjoyment of everyone.
