"Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful." - Herman Cain
Everyone wants to be happy, but most complain that they are not. Is happiness that elusive? Herman Cain did not think so.
When I was growing up, I used to think that if I got this good grade, this teacher, this boyfriend, or whatever, I would be happy. It was like my happiness lay in some person, place or thing in the future. Funniest thing was that when I got the grade, the teacher or the boyfriend, I was already looking around for something else that would bring me true happiness. If I only get this job, marry the right man, get a Bahamas vacation, then I'll be happy.
I would get the success, but found I was never happy. So I would always keep looking for the next thing in my future that I knew would make me happy. No matter what it was when I got it, I wasn't happy. I'd look to something, someone or some place still further in the future to bring me happiness. I couldn't find happiness anywhere or with anyone.
Lately, I have able to do what I have always loved best-writing. I have written about things I was interested in or things that were a part of my life. I never told myself that if only I could sit around and write, I would be happy. However, I am happy and I have been successful, although I'm not making a lot of money yet.
Doing what I always loved has made me happy. Being happy doing what I love has brought me success. Herman Cain was right on.
