H323 - The Messenger of Video Conferencing

Video conferencing is considered a marvel of technology, but often it is the inner programs that are really the stars. Many concepts would never gain life without the assistance of internal systems that make programs function. Most users don't care how the system works, just as long as it does. If you can understand the workings of video conferencing better, you can customize a system that works best for you.

The H323 system is one of these hard workers. If H323 was a member of a castle, it would be the messenger between the gatekeeper and the king. H323 was originally designed to provide video conferencing capabilities over a local area network. Its first purpose was to send messages through an IP system. Modifications and customization have made H323 a superior tool in successful video conferencing.

When a user initiates a call, the gateway is responsible for opening the connection. The endpoints are responsible for notifying the system of activity. The H323 ensures that the message is sped quickly between the two.

H323 video conferencing has gained respect and credibility since that day it came out on to the market. It can be used for both point on point and multipoint conferencing. It is fast, efficient, and gets the job done.

As much as it is capable of, the H323 does not work alone. There are several protocols that share space and duties with in the system. RAS is used for resolution and admittance control. RTP is there to optimize sending and receiving of both text and audio data among participants.

Endpoints are also vital members in the H323 team. They are basically terminals and the simplest part of the entire system. They are also called protocol stack. They have the capability to support all the video data that comes through the system. They are the work horses of the system and utilize all the possibilities of the system.

Codecs also participate in the function of the H323. They are responsible for the encoding and decoding of video throughout the system. The G711 lets the terminals encode and decode audio data.

The Reemergence of H323

There was a time when ISDN VTC and H320 were the standard systems for operating video conferencing. Military, government and corporations still utilize this system because of its ability to do the job needed. They lost popularity with the general public as other video conferencing options came out on to the market that were more modern and user friendly.

There is a rise in interest of these systems again because of the increasing cost of internet services. H323 can be used by any high speed internet connection that exists so it is not hard to access. The ISDN system can cost less to use than its competition.

It is easy to take for granted the technology that makes video conferencing possible for granted. The ability for it to work depends on many systems working harmoniously together. Understanding what each piece does will help to maximize efficiency and use of the entire system.
