The outbreak of swine flu in the last year can be attributed to a virus that began in Mexico in Spring 2009. Since then, it has spread traveled to several other different countries and caused widespread panic throughout America. Though this virus has similar attributes to the common flu, it can be especially harmful to expectant mothers for various reasons. Since the outbreak, a vaccine has been developed to prevent the sickness, so it is imperative for pregnant or soon-to-be-pregnant women to receive the injection.
Pregnant women are especially susceptible to H1N1 flu due to their compromised immune system. Though sometimes the flu can be mild, it can also be extremely dangerous, causing pneumonia, dehydration or even preterm labor. Doctors, nurses and other medical professionals are responsible for being aware of these risks and taking all proper steps to prevent this illness. If this is not done, medical malpractice may have occurred and you may be able to bring these negligent individuals to court if negative effects resulted from their behavior.
Common symptoms of the swine flu include the following:
- Fever
- Cough
- Runny or stuffy nose
- Sore throat
- Body aches
- Chills
- Fatigue
- Diarrhea
- Vomiting
- Headache
