Guitar Tuning for the Beginner

Expert Author Mary Brizard

To accentuate practicing habits the beginning guitar student needs to learn how to tune the guitar. The reason is that an untuned guitar will sound badly no matter how hard he practices. The other reason is that it is important to develop his sense of pitch. The beginner is just getting used to the strings, getting used to hearing how the guitar sounds and is working with as yet mostly new and unfamiliar information. It is for this reason that tuning the guitar gets neglected or forgotten about. The result is that no matter how hard the student practices the guitar does not sound good. Then interest gets lost and the guitar begins to collect dust.

It is recommended at the beginning to get a tuning fork as well as a basic chromatic guitar tuner. Both of these can be bought for under twenty five dollars. In using the tuning fork he will develop his sense of pitch. Using the standard A440 tuning fork will allow him to tune the first string as long as the fifth fret is fretted. Then for ease of this process, it is recommended that he use a chromatic console guitar tuner to tune the rest of the open strings. When the student gets comfortable with this process, other tuning methods can be used.

If the student is going to use a guitar tuner, it is very important to get a basic guitar tuner with basic features. He needs a screen that is not so sensitive as to confuse him with too much information but sensitive enough to give out the right information. The Korg CA 30 chromatic tuner is recommended in this instance. It will give him enough information needed so that he can get the strings to the right general pitch and then exact information to fine tune the pitch. Also, this tuner is very good in that he can get used to working with what his eyes are seeing on the screen and what he is hearing his guitar do. This is a critical piece in developing your sense of pitch and how it applies to 'listening'. If he has a tuner that has too much information (like a strobe tuner for example, or a display that is extra sensitive )this process can get confusing and over time his guitar tuning habits and sense of pitch might get neglected due to frustration.

The beginning guitar student is concerned with learning new information, keeping up on practice and learning how to read chords and scales. This student has much to do in the world of learning the guitar. Also, getting used to playing on the fretboard itself can be a big hurdle. He or she would do well then in addressing a subject that often gets neglected - guitar tuning. I have talked to too many who 'used' to play guitar but did not 'know how to tune the guitar'. Tuning the guitar and maintaining these habits means his practice time will just be that much more effective.

Check out guitar tuners from the Guitar Tuner Shop. We have all sorts of tuners for all sorts of guitarists and this would include the guitar tuner for the beginner.
