Guitar Riff Lesson - How to Write Guitar Riffs

Writing songs with chords is a good place to start when making your own music, but a more difficult task is writing your own guitar riffs. Don't worry about not having enough creativity or not because you can make your own riffs.

How to write guitar riffs.

Make sure you have the proper technical musical knowledge. You should know scales before trying to write you own riffs.

Having proper techniques will help to. If you aren't that good at picking out notes and playing accurately, work on that first.

Star with practicing other people's riffs. You might get these from tablature or better yet, you sit down with the song and figure it out yourself. The more riffs you have learned and practice, the easier writing your own will be.

Think about why the riff was constructed the way it was. Was the riff being playing on a certain scale? What techniques were used to play that riff? If you understand the music behind the riff, then doing the same thing yourself will be much easier.

There are two main ways of writing your own riffs.

For some, they hear the riff in their head and try to move that to the guitar. This will be the most artistic person who might hear melody lines in their head. The guitar is just an expression of the music they already create.

For most of us writing guitar riffs is going to be more technical. This means we take the body of musical knowledge we have like scales and start playing them along with music. It's a more "mathematical" process as the approach is more structured.

Take a song, any song, and start working with a scale while playing the song to see what you can come up with. It's also advisable to learn the melody line of the song on the guitar so that you have something to work with. This takes time to master, but keep practicing and you will get better. Really you will probably have a combination of the two techniques while writing your guitar riffs.
