Guitar Chord Charts - Why This Needs to Be the First Area You Study When Learning the Guitar

When you first get a guitar and start to learn, it is fun to play around with it for a few days. But eventually you will realize that besides having sore fingertips you don't know how to do anything and you may actually want to seriously learn how to play the guitar.

The first thing you need to do is to find a good guitar chord chart that shows you the basic guitar chords. Most can be found online for free. Look for high resolution images for best results so that you can see what is going on. You can also buy a basic guitar instructional book. This will help you since it will have chord charts in them already printed out for you to work with.

You want to keep the proper fingering according to the chart. At first it does not feel right. For example, you go to play a G chord and it feels uncomfortable. Many claim it just won't work with their hands and give up. Honestly, just stick with it and your fingers will eventually move the way they should.

Memorize each chord so you at least know how to do it without looking at a chart. Know each finger position well enough that you do not have to have any images to help you out when playing the chord.

Then get your hand to be able to make the chord. Your muscle memory will improve quickly if you practice.

When this is done, try practicing playing one chord alternating with another chord. At first this is difficult as there is a long pause between chords, but you will get the hang of it after awhile.

Many songs have an I, IV, V progression. If you don't know what this means, playing G, C, and D alone will actually sound like a lot of songs. Alternately you can use E, A, and B. Depending on your rhythm, you will make many songs with just this one progression.
