During May every year, the Council of Naples sponsors the Maggio Dei Monumenti or May of Monuments festival. Although the festival runs throughout the month of May, the events are open to the public only on weekends (Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays). May is an excellent time to visit the region.

During the festival, all museums and monuments that are participating in the festival will remain open to public with no entry charge. Every year, the festival has a different theme which unites all the exhibitions that are on display during this month. The festival also features a number of special cultural activities and events that take place all around the city of Naples.

The most popular event during the festival is the series of guided walking tours that are conducted through the historic districts of the Amalfi region and its underground passages. Along with the tour, the festival features a number of fairs, exhibitions, chamber music concerts, pop concerts, rock shows, cinema screenings, classic Neapolitan music recitals, operettas, soccer matches, dance spectacles, horse races, theatre events and numerous parties as well.

For the duration of this festival, many churches, palaces and private exhibitions that are normally not open to public, throw open their doors and invite visitors from all around Italy and even other countries. In fact, it was during the May of Monuments festival that many monuments were showcased for the first time after restoration. The festival highlights many hidden treasures of Italy, and the theme-wise presentation of the events signifies that visitors will have something different to look forward to every year.

Many of the important exhibitions and events at the festival take place at the Castel Nuovo, Castel Captano and the Castel Dell'Ovo - although the venues vary according to the theme. Also, various performances take place both on the streets as well as at specific churches and theatres throughout the city.

The month of May, and the Maggio Dei Monumenti festival brings the region of Amalfi to life. May is the perfect time to visit the city and the May of Monuments festival draws in some of the best artists from around the world. These artists produce and direct various performances of the festival including the dance shows, theatre performances and various musical features that the month of May produces.
