In case you find an old painting hiding in your attic or you inherit one, you may not know how valuable that painting might be. The same also goes for a sculpture. Suppose you want to find out the value of the art or find out more about the artist, then you would have to do some research to get all the information you need and want.

Here are some basic steps for conducting art research:

• The first thing to do is to take a number of photographs of the art piece. These pictures will not only help you during your research, but will also prove the condition of the piece. In fact, it is advisable to take some photographs and keep them in a safe place just in case.
• Measure the dimensions of the art piece along with its weight. It is imperative that you be specific with the numbers because you will need them later on.
• Next make note of what material the piece is made from. Thereafter, write down how it was made. Whether it was carved, etched or casted.
• Also write down the name or title of the piece and what its subject matter is.
• Check the piece carefully to see whether you can spot the artist's signature or initials. If yes, write this down also.
• Also look for things like numbers, inscriptions, marks and damage. It is quite possible that if the piece was damaged decades ago, it must have been repaired. So, make a note of this too. You should check the art piece carefully to see whether you can locate any dates or stamps. If it is a painting, a stamp would be present most probably on rear of the canvas.
• Now from all the information you have gather, start writing a description that you can refer to when speaking to someone who might help you or when you intend conducting your research.
• If you have the name of the artist, half your work is already done. You can find out more about the artist by reading Artcyclopedia. However, when it comes to art research, you should never rely on just one source.
