Growing Orchids Indoors Is Easier Than You Think

There are a few reasons you may want to be growing your orchids indoors. One of the main reasons is the fact that some of these varieties are found in the tropics which makes them hard to grow outside. Inside you can control the temperature and water requirements for these beautiful plants so that there is less danger of them getting damaged.

Surprisingly enough they are not that hard to keep inside. The main problems you face are...

Lighting:
Unlike many house plants you cannot just put your orchids on a sunny windowsill and let them grow. These plants are very sensitive to bright light. In fact if they get too much light their leaves start to turn yellow. For this reason you should always keep them out of direct light. In fact if they are in direct sunlight their leaves will get burnt. However do not keep them in the dark. Less light will make their leaves turn dark green, so be careful to try to make sure they have enough light.

Watering:
Be careful not to over water your orchids. If they get too much water their roots will rot and they will die. A sign of over watering is if their leaves start to turn yellow. They might also have a strange odor. This means that their roots are getting moldy. If they look a little bit soggy and not quite as healthy as they should be, or you see these signs always take them out of their pot and examine their roots.

Humidity:
Orchids like humidity. Bear in mind that many species of this plant come from the tropics. You can place a humidifier in the room or place them on a tray of small rocks with half an inch of water. Be careful that you do not put too much water or they will soak it up and get waterlogged.

Air circulation:
It is important to have a good flow of air in the room where you keep your orchids. Fans are a good idea but try to be careful that your plants do not get any droughts. Keeping the air moving will prevent bacteria and fungi from attacking their leaves.

Temperature:
Try to keep your orchids warm. Ideally most orchids like temperatures between 70 degrees and 85 degrees during the day and not less than 60 degrees at night. Some orchids like slightly cooler temperatures so check the growing instructions before you take your orchid back home.

By keeping these points in mind you will be able to grow your orchids indoors and enjoy their beauty for a long time.
