I ran across this article last week that just really took my breath away. It was about the results of a survey they had done about what band readers thought was the greatest rock band in American rock and roll history. And, I couldn't even guess what the result would be, with all the great choices. But what shocked me was that readers picked Pearl Jam.
That's run against every band that came out the United States in the past 60 years. I could buy it if it were about bands from the 90s or alt rock bands or something, but that's not what it was.
I was just so sure that there must be other classic groups out there that would rank so much higher than Pearl Jam. I don't know, it just seems improbable that 60 years of music didn't peak until 1994.
Then I really thought about it for a while. Pearl Jam has really produced some excellent music over the years. I could kind of see the point.
There are a dozen or so bands that you could put in the competition for best American rock group: from Lynrd Skynrd to Aerosmith; the Eagles to the Doors. But I could kinds of see how Pearl Jam would come out on top.
I thought about it a good long time, and I guess I have to agree. Pearl Jam really has been totally consistent for almost two decades, producing album after great album, pleasing fans year after year.
Now that I've given it some thought, I'm ready to agree with the masses here, that Pearl Jam is the greatest American rock band of all time. That truly surprises me, it does.
In the end, I have to tip the hat to Pearl Jam - they've been keeping it real longer than some people have been alive (no pun intended). They produce awesome music and have avoided the problems of drugs and disputes that are so prevalent everywhere else. They are great.
