Got Stress? 8 Simple Natural Steps to Stomp Your Stress Quickly

Expert Author Kathryn Merrow

Quick, quick, quick!  Hurry, hurry, hurry!

Does just reading that cause you to feel a little stressed?  There are easy steps you can take to reduce your stress quickly.

Here's how you can "chill out."

1.  Rescue Yourself.  There is a handy little remedy as close as your local health food store.  They usually carry Bach Flower Rescue Remedy.   Four drops under your tongue, as needed.  No, it doesn't act like an instant tranquilizer, but I have seen it calm people down a lot, and it can cause you to look at things in a more calm way.

2.  Stretch Yourself.  When we get stressed, our heads and shoulders tend to move forward, and that causes additional physical stress.  Hold your shoulders back and lift your chest high, as though a string is pulling upward from your breastbone.  Lift your shoulders up and roll them back and around a few times.  Up, back, down.  Gets the blood flowing and relieves some of that physical stress.

3.  Blow Out Instead of Up.  When we're stressed, we take short little breaths.  Take a minute or two to do deep, full breaths to fill up your body with oxygen.  Nice and slow and rhythmic.  Let your chest muscles expand and stretch.

4.  Meditate.  There are many ways to meditate and all of them have many health benefits beside reducing your stress level.

5.  Focus In.  Look at something beautiful or interesting, a pet, a child, a picture or view.  Really look at it.  Just take a few minutes to observe.  Watch a bird flying.  Watch a sunset.  (Park the car first.)

6.  Keep Your Mouth Shut.  Close your lips, but keep your teeth separated, and pretend to chew.  This relaxes the jaw muscles, which tend to get tight when we are stressed.

7.  Get Closure.  Eye muscles can be stressed, too.  Close your eyes and lightly cover your eyes with the palms of your hands.  Be in as comfortable a position as you can.  You want your hands to block out the light, but only very gentle pressure on your skin.

8.  Get Classy.  Take a class in yoga or tai chi or an exercise class that you enjoy.  Bodies were designed to move and movement reduces stress.  Walking is also a great stress buster.

These are all great ways to lower your stress level and you can use them as often as necessary because they don't have any side effects! What great natural "drugs" they are!
