It is of great importance that a hunter patterns their guns and finds the appropriate pellet load when they embark on a successful goose hunt. Many experts will agree that the best loads are sizes 1, BB, BBB or T steel shot. There are plenty of pellets in these loads but there is still enough energy to shoot down the goose.
Guns are usually 10 to 12 gauge, and the best chokes for geese are usually modified. Each choke is unique and a hunter needs to pattern his gun appropriately. It is smart to do a test load. To do this, take a piece of paper that is 40 by 40 inch square sheet. Put it at the same flying distance that the geese will be flying. Fire at a point that you mark on the paper. Keep doing this with smaller size pieces of paper until you determine at what point you will hit the goose's vital zone.
Another common mistake that beginning hunters make is something called "skybusting". This is shooting at ducks that are out of range. This is a detrimental mistake because it can cripple geese, cause the others to fly higher and flare off any other geese that may have been approaching. Some hunters have been able to shoot a goose that dropped from the stratosphere, but for the most part this is totally bad sportsmanship and a case of dumb luck.
Here is a good rule of thumb that most hunters go by. If the end of your gun barrel covers more than half of the goose it is beyond 45 yards and that is simply too far away for you to achieve a clean kill.
