Google AdWords Tips

Expert Author Kristine Wirth

If you tend to use Google's AdWords program a lot then you could find yourself having a difficult time turning a profit. So let's cover some tips to make it a little bit easier for you to create more conversions and ultimately, make more money without you having to spend your last dime!

Tip #1: Make sure that you create a separate ad group for each keyword you use within AdWords. Now, this might seem like an extremely lengthy process, but it will help you discover which ads you're running are doing you the most good and which ads are just taking your money.

At last look, Google will let you create up to 25 different campaigns in your account and each of these campaigns can have up to 100 Ad Groups. This gives you a greater control over the text of the ad itself and let's you split-test those ads in greater detail. (I cover split-testing in Tip #3).

Tip #2: Vary your keywords. There are a wide variety of keywords available for any kind of market and it's up to you to choose those keywords that will get you the most business. While it might not be in your budget right now to test a lot of keywords and their ad variations, start with at least 20 and work your way up. You'll soon begin to see which ones are panning out for you (e.g. getting people to sign up for your list or purchasing a product), and which ones are not performing well.

Tip #3: Split Test. AdWords lets you split-test your ads. This means that you can alternate between ads and then after a certain amount of time, be able to see which one is outperforming the other. Testing is perhaps the biggest key to success when it comes to AdWords. Without it, you end up shooting in the dark. Know which advertisement is doing well, and keep improving on that ad to get more click-throughs and to get more website traffic.

Tip #4: Exploit that Ad. Once you know which ad is performing the best for you, start giving that ad keywords that may be considered a little competitive within your market. They may be a little more expensive to advertise on but remember, Google rewards advertisers for how well their ad is performing, not how big their advertising budget is.

The whole key to advertising effectively with Google's AdWords program is to write ads that get great click-through-rates; in other words, ads that perform very well. It doesn't matter what kind of big-name competition you're up against, if you write a great ad that gets a lot of clicks, Google will reward you for that by placing you higher in the sponsored results AND will charge you less per click than what you were paying.
