Golfing Tips and Tricks

Remember what the pros say - not all golfing tips work for every golfer. For a tip to work for you it has to be the right fit for you. This means, don't try and interlock your fingers on your golf club, if that really doesn't feel good to you. The ball doesn't care if your fingers are interlocked, as long as you have a good swing technique!

1. Work on one tip at a time - remember "A Jack of all trades is a master of none". Choosing one tip at a time will reduce the time it takes to improve your game as you master one problem area at a time. Your game will improve greatly over time if you do this.

2. Close your eyes while practicing putting, without using a ball to begin with. This will help you improve your putting and your swing naturally and help you identify what your body is doing throughout the swing. Once you are comfortable, move on to actually putting with a ball. You will adjust your swing naturally over time to sink the ball far more often.

3. Keep your fitness and flexibility up. This will help immeasurably with your game, your swing, your enjoyment and your recovery afterwards. Who wants to spend the next few days nursing sore abdominal muscles after a great game? There is a lot of information on exercises that can help - just a few are general stretches pre-and-post exercise, as well as yoga and pilates, which are also good for strength and stamina.

4. Focus on your balance - this will improve your golf swing by making your swing more natural, fluid and produce less tension in your body. The exercises mentioned above will help you with this. Standing in your chosen swing position for around 30 seconds to a minute will also help you identify areas of imbalance. If you can stand in your swing position for a couple of minutes without tension or losing balance, you've got a good starting position.

5. Keep your eyes on the ball for the whole duration of the swing. If you find you glance away at the last instant, try focusing on the green directly underneath the ball until you've completed your swing.

6. Relax your grip on the club, keeping your wrists, arms and shoulders relaxed and loose. Let the club do some of the work for you! It's a good idea to grip mostly with your lead hand's fingers rather than the palm.

7. The best tip is at some point to have a few lessons, if you can - it will help immeasurably to have someone experienced there to help you pinpoint any trouble spots in your game, and give you some more ideas on how to improve these.

And above all, relax, have fun and play within your limitations - keep your goals realistic (you can always adjust them later as you improve). If you don't practice every day of the week for hours on end, you probably aren't going to play like a pro - but you can still have a great game and technique, and have fun doing it!
