Golf Shank - Why It Is a Bad Word and How to Fix Your Problem!

Expert Author Benjamin Robert Ehinger

If you are a golfer, then you have heard of a golf shank and you may have even suffered from a case of these terrible shots that are also known as hosel rockets. This is not a fun thing to go through and most golfers cannot play a good round when they have a case of the shanks. It is like a sickness and when you get them it can be very hard to get rid of. Here are some things you should know.

First, these are mainly physical at first, then after you start seeing them happen over and over again and you cannot get rid of them it becomes mental. They get stuck in your head and they make you want to throw things, hit things, and maybe even quit golf for good. This is not fun and it is not something you have to go through. There are ways to understand the shanks and the first part is to understand that you need to refer to them as something else, like the sillies.

Second, the golf shank is usually caused by an imbalance in the swing or a bad weight shift. This causes you to get stuck too far ahead of the ball and you come in with the hosel of the club instead of the face of the club. These can start in your chipping, pitching, or even in your iron or wood shots. These can be with just one club in the bag or it can be with every club in the bag. You will not know why they showed up, but you will be ready to get rid of them right away.

Last, the way to fix the golf shank is to hit a ton of balls. You want to concentrate on keeping your weight back and if you have to start with a chip shot and work your way to a half pitch, then a three quarter pitch, then a full shot. Hit balls until you are confident that you have worked them out of your system, then make sure you are mentally prepared because you may hit one or two more hosel rockets before they are gone completely. You have to write these off as just mistakes and move on.
