Golf Ball Positioning 101

One of the most important aspects of golf for any new golfer is ball position. Using the same golf ball set up for every golf club isn't going to get results on the golf course. The position of your golf ball can change loft, spin, distance, and flight path. The question is, how do you make ball position work for you?

The Driver:

Most new golfers have a lot of trouble with this golf club because it is so unlike the rest. You ball positioning is at the front of your stance. A lot of golfers prefer the golf ball to be in line with your front foot. This is a good start. This position will give the golf club right timing it needs to come around.

The Science: A driver has a flex to it. When you swing this golf club fast it bends. If you were to contact the ball in the middle of your body, the bend would be enough to force the ball away from you. A forward golf ball position gives the face of the club time to come around and make proper contact.

Long Irons/Fairway Woods/Hybrids:

There are several different ways people play these clubs. Some like the ball to be directly in the middle of their stance. Others want the ball to be closer to the front foot, like a driver. Traditional golfers will tell you that your ball should be in between these two extremes.

The Trick: Everyone has a different view point because no one's swing is the same. When deciding on your golf ball position, know that it should be in the forward part of your golf stance. If you find you are topping the ball, set it further back. Only you can find the sweet spot of your swing.

Short Irons:

The general rule for short iron ball position is middle and back. Just like the long irons or fairway woods, how much depends on your specific golf swing. If you find that you aren't getting enough loft on your golf ball through the air, set the ball further back in your golf stance.

Wedges:

Here is where it all changes. When using wedges (pitching, sand, lob etc.) and even 9 or 8 irons, the correct golf ball position is in the middle of your stance. These golf clubs are shorter than any others in your golf bag. They are designed to cut underneath the golf ball.
