Glycemic Index Lists Explained. The thought of having to modify their eating habits will put many people off. Others will find the thought of having to adapt to one of the new, healthy eating regimes quite abhorrent. Particuarly so when they hear the terms 'glycemic index (GI) or glycemic index list; but do not worry, it is all pretty easy to get to grips with, if you just open your mind, and pay a little attention for about a minute! Here I will try to explain glycemic indexes in everyday terms, so you will know exactly what they are!
The terms glycemic index (GI) or glycemic indexes in the plural are essentially the same. The (GI) or indexes are just a list of foods. Although, they can be referred to in many different ways. However, the (GI) awards foods a ranking according to how they affect a person's blood sugar or blood glucose levels. This means that any foods that are extremely high in carbohydrates will rank extremely high on the (GI) rating, whereas foods that have little effect on blood sugars or blood glucose will have a low ranking.
The purpose of the (GI) or indexes is to help you know which foods are high in carbohydrates so that you can avoid them and only eat foods that have a lower (GI) rating. By avoiding foods at the top or even the middle of the (GI), and eating foods from the bottom end of the index, your blood sugars or blood glucose levels will fluctuate less. This means that your body does not go through various highs and lows as it would do if you ate foods high on the (GI)!
Effectively this stabilizes your body from within, so instead of giving it a massive shot of blood sugars, you just drip feed it the blood sugars, which causes the stabilizing effect!
So do not be scared by the terms (GI) or (GI) lists. All that you have to consider these as are lists of foods; the ones at the top and middle of the lists are not so healthy, but those at the bottom are especially beneficial for you! In a nutshell that is the glycemic index explained, so keep this in mind and do not be fooled by any complex explanations you read: just keep it simple!
